History

The YUST German Department was founded in 2000 as part of the YUST School of Foreign Languages. Since that time, in addition to English and Korean, it has been possible to study German as a major. German Studies is meant for students who have the intention of working for a German company in China, teaching German as a foreign language, or studying in one of the German-speaking countries of Europe. German major classes are also of some interest for students from other departments who have similar intentions.

Teaching Methods

The objective of the German major at Yanbian University of Science and Technology is to give our German students professional skills in the German language and culture.
The students mainly study theoretical and practical knowledge of German. Besides having the ability to communicate professionally in German, our students also get to know German and European culture, history, politics, and economy.
In the second part of the study program, which begins in the second half of the third year, the students will have the chance to specialize in fields such as German Literature, Drama, or Poetry or to choose a more practical specialization, such as Business German or German for Tourism.
The students will be able to use German professionally for translation, research, German teaching, and business purposes.

Teaching Goals

At the end of their studies, the students should have obtained:

1. a solid knowledge of the German language and the ability to use it in a professional way
2. basic and intermediate knowledge of German linguistics and literature
3. the ability to comprehend the structure and characteristics of Germany society and culture, and to compare it to other countries
4. proficient communication skills in an additional foreign language (English, Korean)
5. composition and basic research skills, as well as practical working abilities in translation or language teaching

Personal Care

A very special aspect of YUST is the personal care for each student. Besides teaching pure academic skills, it is important for us to accompany our students on their way through their studies, and give them useful advice for their lives after university.
To promote this aspect, every student is assigned a teacher as their advisor. This advisor not only provides help with academic problems, but also offers the possibility for personal contact between students and teachers. Examples include sharing meals, participating in sports activities, or movie nights.
